Signs of Foundation Problems
Not every crack is serious, but these signs are worth a professional look — especially in San Antonio's shifting clay.

- Diagonal cracks in drywall above doors and windows
- Doors that stick or won't latch
- Windows that are hard to open
- Stair-step cracks in brick
- Sloping or uneven floors
- Gaps between walls and ceiling or trim
- Cracked floor tile
- Cabinets or counters pulling away from walls
Outside the house
- Gaps around window and door frames on brick walls
- Chimney leaning or separating
- Cracks in the slab edge (beam) wider than a credit card
- Soil pulling away from the foundation in summer
When to call
If cracks are growing, wider than about 1/8 inch, or you notice several signs together, get an inspection. Hairline cracks from normal concrete shrinkage are common and often harmless.
